Coach Strange Love’s lessons from Prime Time

I’m trying to figure out what’s going on with the most popular and controversial coaches in football.

Do you know who I’m talking about?

First off, there seems to be the brashness, but I won’t throw stones on that one because I don’t know the man.

After that, I see some positives, like the way he talks about his young players and wanting to help them grow into men, so there’s all the good stuff in there, too, and …

It has me scratching my head.

Deon Sanders has lit the football world on fire in his short time as the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes.

He’s been doing an amazing job turning around the University’s team, but don’t take my word for it …

Have a look at what the most trusted source in the world ever has to say:

“The Buffaloes finished the season with only one win over California in overtime, their first one-win season since 2012 and their fourth since 1917. This was one of the worst seasons in program history as Colorado lost all but three games by at least 25 points.”

That was from Wikipedia, by the way.

Anyway …

The Colorado’s record is way better this year, and Coach Prime is a big reason why.

Last night, though …

OUCH!

That 46-43 loss to Stanford Cardinal was painful.

What I loved about Deon’s post-game press conference was that he didn’t shy away from constructively criticizing his team’s performance.

There was one line that stood out, though, that nothing to do with x’s and o’s, and had, in my humble opinion, more to do with life and God.

He said loved the game of football to what I’m going to describe as an unhealthy level. Maybe you can relate with whatever it is in your life that represents “football” to you, whether that’s hunting and fishing, or maybe cars, or your business – maybe it even is football.
I know I can relate to that.

Coach Prime wants his players to bring that same love of the game to his football program at Colorado – not “like” but “love.”

And it was after that point in the presser when he said something that hit me.

“I love this,” he said.

“Sadly, I love it so much, but sadly, the game don’t even occupy the ability to love you back. That’s a strange love, isn’t it?”

Yes it is, but …

It’s the kind of love we can all relate to, the love we have for “things.”

It is a strange love.

We say we love this thing or that thing, but it’s not really “love”, but if we feel that it actually is, then what we have is a disordered perspective.

Don’t have strange love.

Love God. Love Jesus. Love the Church.

Love your neighbour out of love for God.

Stay holy my friend.

P.S. Coach Sanders closed out his press conference that day by saying “God bless.” Score one for Prime (even though he’s not Catholic).
