A Home Alone marketing lesson from horrible parents

+JMJ+

It’s DAY 6 of The Marketing Trad’s 2023 Advent Calendar …

And let’s talk more about the cool marketing lesson you can learn from the negligent parents in one of America’s most beloved Christmas movies.

Mostly everybody knows the basic plot of Home Alone, right?

Kevin McCallister is left “home alone” ahead of Christmas, a pair of bungling burglars gets involved, and hilarity ensues.

Kevin wouldn’t have been in the situation in the first place, though, if his parents hadn’t left him behind during their mad rush to catch a holiday flight to Paris.

Once the McCallister family (minus one) is well on their way across the Atlantic, there’s a scene that gives you a revealing glimpse into the psychology of how every single human brain on the planet works.

Something is bugging the mom … for some reason, she “feels” that something isn’t quite right.

So, what does she do?

She starts running through a list to try and figure out her problem.

Kate McCallister: Did I turn off the coffee?

Peter McCallister: No, I did.

Kate McCallister: Did you lock up?

Peter McCallister: Yeah.

Kate McCallister: Did you close the garage?

Peter McCallister: That’s it. I forgot to close the garage. That’s it.

Kate McCallister: No, that’s not it.

Peter McCallister: Well, what else could we be forgetting?

Kate McCallister: … KEVIN!!

Coming up with a list is one of the most universal ways people go about trying to solve a problem …

Whether you’re working on your company’s growth strategy, or figuring out what to buy at the grocery store.

Even Santa has a list!

This is why you should look at using bullet-points in your marketing, because people are naturally drawn to them, and in case you didn’t know …

There IS a way to craft those bullets to help you close more sales. I’m talking about little tricks and tips here and there to take your emails to the next level …

Things I’ve learned from my 15 years as a writer and producer in the TV news industry … and the years I’ve spent studying some of history’s greatest marketers.

So, how are you with bullets?

Do you load them up into your sales copy?

If you do, are you aiming to build intrigue, or do you just slap ’em in there so you can rush through the writing process and get ’er done?

More importantly …

Are you building up your bullets so they target your ideal customer’s deepest fears and desires?

If you aren’t doing any of these things, you may be firing blanks with your copy.

There are ways to be hyper-effective with this copywriting technique, and people who are in the “bullet club” know what it can do for sales. You could say it’s as much an art as it is a science.

Stay holy and God bless.

P.P.S. A final quote about the Church’s battle against Liberalism … It’s from Pope Gregory XVI and his Encyclical Letter Mirari Vos that was published in August 15, 1832.

“To check the audacity of those who attempt to infringe upon the rights of this Holy See or to sever the union of the churches with the See of Peter, instill in your people a zealous confidence in the papacy and sincere veneration for it. As St. Cyprian wrote: “He who abandons the See of Peter on which the Church was founded, falsely believes himself to be a part of the Church.”
