An email marketing secret hidden in the NFL season?

+JMJ+

It’s DAY 13 of The Marketing Trad’s 2023 Advent Calendar and this week is going to be a short one, which got me thinking about football …

My mind is clear enough to remember when the NFL had a 16-game schedule.

Do you remember those good old days, too? (A lot of things changed after 2020, if you catch my drift.)

All you needed was 17 weeks and that was it …

By the end of December, you were ready for the playoffs.

Playoffs?!

You want to talk about the playoffs?

We’re about to wrap up week 15 of the NFL, but there are still three more weeks to go!

I hate the extension of the regular season, and yes, that’s a First World problem, I know, but I don’t care.

To all the teams fighting for a playoff spot, sure, I guess that one extra week helps, but let’s be honest …

A good chunk of the league is ready to move on.

They’re either ready to get going with the postseason, or they’re making draft picks and planning golf trips.

The thing is …

The majority of NFL fans don’t seem to mind another week of action – as long as they’re entertained, which brings me around to your email marketing.

Don’t ever let someone tell you that you can’t sell something with a long email, because you can …

The catch is, just like the NFL, you have to be entertaining.

If every team started fielding back-up players and putting in sub-par efforts, Week 18 wouldn’t have the potential to be interesting.

If your email is holding the reader’s attention, then feel free to get up around the 800 word mark, or even longer – I’ve seen it work.

The longer you go, though, the more you better be putting in an MVP-caliber performance – think Tom Brady during his peak years as a Patriot, or Peyton Manning when he was still in Indy, or me at a sushi buffet.

That’s it for now.

Stay holy my friend and God bless.

P.S. Go Cowboys!

P.P.S. If you want help with your company’s emails, give me a shout at [email protected]. The New Year’s pricing discount is over, but we can still look at a booking a consultation, but I won’t be filling any sports until after January 3rd.

P.P.P.S. More house cleaning here. I won’t be sending emails from December 24th through the 26th, but they’ll pick up again on the 27th.

P.P.P.P.S. Today’s Gospel reading in the Old Rite:

“At that time, the Jews sent to John from Jerusalem priests and Levites to ask him, Who are you? And he acknowledged and did not deny; and he acknowledged, I am not the Christ. And they asked him, What then? Are you Elias? And he said, I am not. Are you the Prophet? And he answered, No. They therefore said to him, Who are you? that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What have you to say of yourself? He said, I am the voice of one crying in the desert, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as said Isaias the prophet. And they who had been sent were from among the Pharisees. And they asked him, and said to him, Why, then, do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elias, nor the Prophet? John said to them in answer, I baptize with water; but in the midst of you there has stood One Whom you do not know. He it is Who is to come after me, Who has been set above me, the strap of Whose sandal I am not worthy to loose. These things took place at Bethany, beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.” (John 1:19-28)
