I’m going to indoctrinate my children this weekend …
And I’m going to pour the propaganda on thick and heavy.
Hey, as a dad, it’s my job.
Why?
Because it’s Super Bowl Sunday and the kids have got to learn …
There’s more to life than football, especially when it comes to the Catholic Faith.
Are we watching the game?
Oh, you know it.
Are we doing snacks?
Yep!!!!!!!
Will there be chicken wings?
Absolutely! They’ll be hot and spicy, too, just like the way I write my emails.
Is there going to be beer involved?!
Let’s just say that game time means Guinness Time in my household, and in proper beer mugs, too.
Am I going to pour on the catechesis?!
110%, baby!!!
It all starts in the morning with going to Mass, and my kids are going to know that it’s Quinquagesima Sunday, the final Sunday before Lent.
During the game, I have my Catholic Altar server to root for.
That’s right, I’m talkin’ about good ol’ number 7 for the Kansas City Chiefs, Mr. Traditional Latin Mass Harrison Butker.
He already has two Super Bowl rings, including the one where he sealed the deal for the Chiefs by nailing his 27-Yard field goal with 8 seconds left on the clock, and …
Make sure you keep an eye out for his Brown Scapular.
There’s another big Catholic connection to the Super Bowl …
The Championship Trophy, after all, is named after one of the greatest football coaches of all time – Vince Lombardi.
By all accounts, he was a devout Catholic who went to daily Mass, and was even an altar boy back in the day when he was 12.
If you’re watching Sunday, I hope you enjoy the game, even if it might be rigged, but do me a favour …
Don’t forget to go to Mass, and, if you can work it out, get to Confession.
A priest once reminded me that when we confess our sins, Jesus not only forgives the evil we’ve done …
He forgets it.
Just think about that …
No matter what you’ve done, however bad it was, you can go to the Sacrament of Confession and have your sin wiped away by our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
It’s not just forgiven …
It’s entirely washed away.
If that’s not a good enough reason to make any Sunday “super,” then I don’t know what is.
Stay holy my friend and God bless.
