I shouldn’t be doing this AGAIN, but I found an awesome video that you need to see, especially if you’re a Catholic entrepreneur.
Why?
Because if you’re like me, one of the reasons you’re in business is to make money, but …
The love of money is deadly sinful, which is why that shouldn’t be the primary force driving us in our businesses.
As Catholics, we know it’s more important to store up treasure in Heaven, because, at the end of the day …
No matter how much money you bring into your organization, you can’t take any of it with you.
The only thing that’s going to matter when we die is how much we loved and served our Lord.
Now, I know …
That isn’t exactly the kind of thing you’d expect to hear from a marketer who’s plugging his email services day in and day out, but you’re not reading this because the only thing you want out of life is to make big-time baller moolah.
The Marketing Trad is about growing your sales AND your faith.
And yes, I get it …
It’s important to bring in money to keep things going, to support your loved ones and the people who work for you, but your soul is far more important …
Which is why I need to share this video with you.
It’s by the world famous exorcist Fr. Chad Ripperger and was posted on the Sensus Fidelium YouTube channel.
This isn’t a video about “what Hollywood gets wrong when it comes to exorcisms,” or what it’s like to see people walking up walls.
The title tells the story …
“What is Laziness, Sloth, & Workaholicism & Their Dangers.”
Chances are that if you’re an entrepreneur, you’re not “lazy” lazy, because who has time for that?!
It’s the stuff about being a workaholic that’s worth noting, and how that’s actually driven by a lack of self discipline.
Pride, of course, underlies it all, which leads us into sin, especially when we’re putting our businesses ahead of God and our families.
Now, you should be taken to the key section of the video thanks to the coding in the hyperlink, but just in case, the part I’m talking about starts around the 41:40 mark.
The line that really caught my attention was when Fr. Ripperger mentions a line he’s told to workaholics that goes like this: “Look, I realize that you achieve great things by making that extra $5 million, but here’s the moral of the story: when you’re in Heaven that $5 million is going to be nothing.”
And he follows that mic-drop moment with this:
“You really need to back it off and start working on having a contemplative life … our Lord Himself said it that Mary had chosen the greater part, and so I often tell people it means if you can get to the point where you can engage in a semi-contemplative life, and you don’t do it, you’re turning down the greater part, right, by doing these other things. Yeah these things are good and they might be an accomplishment, etc., and they might help people, but in the end your own soul would be better fashioned in the more contemplative approach, by seeing that if I have the means that’s a sign that God is giving me the opportunity … part of the reason for affluence is so that it frees us up from the lower virtues to pursue the higher virtues”
BOOM!
In the words of the guitar-playing, teenage time-traveller Marty McFly, “that’s heavy!”
So, the bottom line is this …
It’s not that we shouldn’t be driven as entrepreneurs, but that ambition needs to be moderated and focused through a Catholic lens.
I really shouldn’t be plugging material for other people, but this one is 110% on point with my core beliefs, so I just had to share it with you.
Stay holy my friends and God bless.
